I don’t come from a tradition that celebrates Valentine’s Day and I’ve never liked all the focus on buying things for this date in the US, the cards, the candy, the heart-shaped, red stuff. As an adolescent, I did celebrate El Día del Amor y la Amistad (the day of love and friendship) in September, with small gestures of appreciation for those closest to me. But as a family, we haven’t made much of Valentine’s before.
But this morning Chiqui, 7, and Golondrina, 4, presented Brujo and me with cards they had made for us. I especially loved a multicolored heart that reads: Te amo mamá.
That rainbow heart is an invitation for me, to celebrate love intentionally on this day. I can celebrate my relationship with my precious Brujo, and with my cherished children. And I can celebrate all of the love that fits in this world!
So today I celebrate the love I feel for the cardinal pair that lives in the tree outside my window, who call to me when I need to remember what matters. And I celebrate the authors who have written the books that feed my soul. I celebrate the laughter I share with the friends of my soul, and I celebrate them. I celebrate the winter sky. And the spirit that joins it/us All together.
