My 7 year-old son, (I’ll call him) Chiqui, has a precious day off school when his younger sister does have to go. When I asked him how he would like to spend it, I braced myself for requests for things he can’t usually have, like “grown-up” movies, or going to the school’s winter pool party.
When he heard of the gift of this day, his eyes lit up and he spoke slowly, saying, “Let’s you and me go to a park close to school and clean up the trash there, so we can leave it really clean. We’ll bring home whatever we can use, like cans and wire, and then you and I will build a machine with it, together!”
I am so awed and grateful for his spirit of stewardship of nature, and for the blessing of his deep enjoyment of creating something together with me… our favorite way of bonding. On this day, I realize again that I am blessed to know this child, and I can already intuit how much he has to teach me!
